Learn with Us | Bird Nutrition - An Overview

Summary
A well nourished bird, is a healthy bird. It’s imperative that we as owners provide a well-balanced diet to try and replicate the bird’s natural diet.
We, as bird owners, should aim to provide a great diet with a variety of foods and products.
There are multiple products available now which will help provide adequate bird nutrition to make our birds and parrots more resistant to disease, and help them live longer, happier lives.
Namely, these include, bird seed, bird pellets, fruit and vegetables and supplementary products such as multi vitamins.
Lastly, we love our birds right!? That’s why we have them! So we will also talk about our favourite bird treats too!
Awesome, lets jump right in!
Seed

Seed alone is NOT a balanced diet for our parrots. On it’s own, this is only providing your bird with carbohydrates and/or fats. Although you can add fruit and vegetables into the mix; this will still lack enough vitamins, proteins and minerals for your bird. Without this balanced diet, there’s a higher risk of malnutrition.
Our Avigrain Blue Parrot Mix 5kg here at Nick’s are a popular seed treat offered in conjunction with pellets to large parrot native and exotic species, and contains some yummy ingredients such as: Grey Stripe Sunflower, Oats, Cracked Corn, White French Millet, Wheat , Safflower, Panorama, Banana Chips, PARROT Peanuts, Paw-Paw, Pineapple and/or Sultanas.
Pellets
Pellets are nutritionally better quality for your parrots, as they contain all the essential vitamins, proteins and minerals in each serving.
For most parrots, we follow the recommendation of pellets being 80% of the total diet, with the remainder being vegetables, fruits and a small amount of nuts and seeds.
It is recommended for smaller parrots and birds (such as cockatiels and budgies) should be fed no more than 50% pelleted diet. You can check our wide range of nutritious pellets sold at Nick’s here.

Bird Treats
Bird treats should be given sparingly. When choosing a treat for your bird, it’s beneficial to look for all natural treats that can also offer wholesome ingredients.
A popular treat here at Nick’s are the Peckish Parrot Mixed berry treats. These
treats are an all-natural treat, packed with wholesome ingredients like real strawberries, raspberries, cranberries, black currants, blueberries and blackberries.
The inclusion of real fruits like these provide a range of health benefits for your bird including an extra boost of antioxidants, iron, Vitamin C and potassium, which all promote a better quality of life for parrots.
As an alternative to providing seed, you could millet spray along with the bird pellets, vegetables and fruits.
Vegetables & fruits
To maintain a healthy diet balance for your bird, a variety of vegetables and fruits should be offered daily. Vet recommended vegetables safe for birds include: Carrots, kale, green beans, asparagus, broccoli, parsley and capsicum.
All vegetables need to be thoroughly washed, and can be fed both raw or cooked (though cooking can reduce some of the nutrients).
Vet recommended fruits include the following:
Apples, apricots, banana, mango, watermelon and grapes.
All fruits should be washed thoroughly, and all fruit seeds removed (as these are toxic to birds). Avocado should never be fed to birds, as it is toxic.
